From Puritans to Transcendentalists

As we remember, this month, that mythic Thanksgiving of old, let’s also reflect on those ancestors of the Unitarians, the Puritans, who were known for seeking religious freedom. Their sense of congregational governance was revolutionary, but then it got out of control as independent congregations started to make their own unorthodox decisions. How did things evolve from there to give us Emerson and Thoreau?
